why did it happen?

I bought a ONN freeview box a couple of years ago and 2 nights ago while sitting in bed watching it, it blew up it made such a loud bang that i jumped out of bed.
I opened it up the morning after to find that the mico-chip had actually exploded and split in half n all round the circuit board it was black.
my question is why has this happened and is it normal for them to do that help im so very confused?
Thanx in advance

An exploding chip is a relatively rare event - if a fault develops in a chip that causes too much current to be drawn the chip may get too hot too quickly and any gasses produced have no way of escaping. Eventually the gas pressure inside destroys the chip package.

Here's a video of a guy deliberately exploding a processor chip by running it too quickly and without cooling.

Unlucky for you a chip failed - it just happened to explode.
