how to fit a alternator belt?

have a p reg dispatch van, brought an alternator belt using the chaset number but it seams to big ?? although it same size as the one that came off .. does anyone know how they go round the wheels?

Hi gary,

I don't know the specifics of your van, but you will find that most alternators have a 'tensioner' which needs relaxing before the new belt goes on, then tightening afterwards.

The tesioner serves to oppose the the belt ( you will notice the wheel touches the outside of the belt, whereas the alternator and engine wheel are on the inside) hope this helps
