Stereo in 'Safe Mode' and I dont have the Code either?

I have '98 R reg, Vauxhall Astra 1.6LS, second hand, had the battery off for a while and now after a few attempts at guessing the Code (which the seller didnt give me) The stereo has now gone into safe mode and i dont have the code either...grrrrrrr
