I have a double button push cistern, when I flush the cistern it empties, refills and over flows, the plastic adjuster when turned on the float seems to make no difference, after over flowing for a few seconds it stops. can you help.

It sounds like you have one of the cheaper type of float valves, Bill - some are better than others. The only thing you can really do is to adjust it to its maximum and then consider a new type. The usual problem is that the float doesn't ride up its guide smoothly.
