Samsung HTq100.No Disc message on display screen?

Hi. Samsung HTQ100 reads no disc when i insert DVDs or CDs,Also cant get remote to work on the DVD player.Sorry to sound so thick but does the DVD player have to be connected to a TV for the remote to work.Any advice would be greatly appreciated.Thanks in advance. Derr
