rear lights?

i have a 53 plate fiesta "black" all in all i am very pleased but i have a problem with the rear lights, when lights are turned on the rear lights work but the brake light is also illuminated, when the lights are off the brake lights do not work, other than this all rear and front lights work,i have already tried the bulb which is mentioned in the handbook! anyone heard of this or know if i should be using a double or single filament bulb? thank you

also check whether they are double or single contact bulbs [with single filament] also if brake bulb is a twin filament is it fitted the correct way round i'e' 21/5w offset pin stop/tail bulb

You should be using single filaments bulbs. indicater is a single one brake light is a single one and fog lights are single ones.
Also just check to see if the back lights electrical connector are fitted right in the right order make sure the guide clips fit in the right position ok
