Check your lift pump is working correctly. Take off the top and clean the filter screen. There is also a sediment/water catcher bowl located below the tank on the RHS of the machine. Clean this out also. Check your lift pump is delivering air free fuel. A speck of rust etc. under the pump valves can result in air in the line being pushed and pulled back and forth. Bleed carefully to the top of the filter and when air free fuel escapes move onto the injector pump. I have always found it necessary to slack off the pipes at the injectors and crank the engine until fuel escapes. Some fitters run the engine on "easy start" to speed up the process, but I personally am not to keen on this method.

Does the lift pump have a manual trigger, that pushes the diesel up to the injector pump?
If not, slacken one of the injector pipe nuts - any one will do - and see if this purges the system when you crank it over. This is the JCB shovel, I presume?
