Ok, what about a box that worked fine, unplugged it as moved my room around, plug it back in and all I get is a clicking from the fan every second like a clock. There are no lights whatsoever coming on. Iv tried the fuse, diff sockets, even leaving it plugged in for 18 hrs and still nothing

For most of the above problems with newish boxes, make sure all aerial plugs are making a PERFECT connection to the lead. Digital is much fussier than analogue. Get a new aerial fitted. A new wideband aerial is needed. Retune to your LOCAL transmitter. Since going digital you may be getting a not so local transmitter. Find out by pressing MENU, 4, 1, BLUE. Note the frequencies. Look up your LOCAL frequencies and Retune as needed. If you get stuttery playback your power supply needs new capacitors. This will also solve nearly all other probs. Mine is about 5 or 6 years old and has had 2 lots of capacitors fitted. I use it all the time, and have had most of the mentioned hassles and problems. To the above person that took his hard drive apart. NEVER, NEVER, EVER take one apart!! They are made in a sterile, dust free atmosphere. Open it and it'll suck in dust like a Hoover. These are excellent boxes when set up correctly. I think they are better than most other branded units as these are so simple to use.

DIY Repair solution for Thomson boxes that won't boot(and are out of Warranty).Symptoms:Hard drive labouring, making more noise than usual, finally fails to boot when switching on at mains.
DIY FIX that worked for me: Disconnect from mains.Undo screws to main casing and any hindering access - prize slightly apart +slide forward top and bottom section together off the main body(it's hard to separate them without damage)Using hoover with variable suction carefully suck up dirt around fan, hard drive and circuit board.Undo retainers on hard drive-(mine was made by seagate)-lift up carefully -it's connected to circuit board,...using suitable screwdriver remove visible screws and one under label in middle... prize apart drive carefully and apply v.gentle suction with hoover nozzle at a distance around central disc to remove dust particles that might impede rotation.Gently lift fragile central arm very slightly and check disc rotates ok. Lay open connected drive carefully on top of plastic casing, careful not to short out circuit board and briefly connect power supply to test drive rotates and machine starts boot up light flashing sequence*DANGER OF ELECTRIC SHOCK*-At Own Risk!! Further subtle adjustment only if necessary. Unplug before re-assembly. (Careful to locate front buttons in correct slots in casing). RESULT:Drive quieter and still working fine 4 weeks later. Hope it works 4U2.

I had an old Thomson box that worked great for years and has now died.

I have recently tried 4 freeview boxes and returned each one with the same bug. I have an analouge set and set my picture as 4.3 'pan and scan' or 'centre cut out'. I hate widescreen TVs!! Each one of the new boxes has the same bug with channel 4 programs (UK) in that the image reverts to letterbox while all other chanels are fine. My best guess is they are all made using the same faulty chips or software. So anyone with an old set beware and send these crappy boxes back for a refund if you have any bugs in them.

the problem with these boxes is the same as the sky+ version of them ,its the power supply capacitors that are cheap.
there is a repair upgrade kit containing 15 capacitors for around about £10 for the sky+ boxes and it can also be used in the freeview version as it has the same power supply, you will need a bit of soldering skill but a diagram and instructions is suppied in the kit.
after the repair upgrade these boxes are very good.

sky+ symptoms are
poor fluctuating signal levels
freezing picture
unit turning off on its own
unable to record or access recordings
and skipping on playback of recordings

I know all these symptoms appear in the freeview version through experiance.
I hope this helps everyone who is having problems with the thomson freeview recorders.

i have a flashing red light all the time

mic wev, October 2009
Our box will turn on for all of a minute then will totally freeze. Have to turn it off by the plug, doesn't matter how long you leave it switched off for does the same thing each time. Have tried everything, really losing the will to live with it. Any ideas?

another stressed out thompson owner, October 2009
were on our second box the man told us in the shop it would happen again as there is a problem they cant solve with them but they will always replace the box as it always happens within the first 12months! till now were 3 weeks out of warrenty it died on us at the weekend, wonder what theyll say this time??

Kim wilde, August 2009
Got same problem with mine and unable to contact them. Orange light on and trying to reboot but not happening, my friend had the same problem over the weekend left it on and it was working when they returned, I'm trying it now will let you know if it works

Ryan, May 2009
Sorry, folks it still doesn't switch on. Bit of a waste of money I'd say as I have only had box 2 year. Thanks anyway.

Mirin, May 2009
unplug the box for 20sec. press and hold standby button on the box while plugging it back in. As soon as the amber light flashes let go and press up,down, left and right arrow keys in sequence 3 times. The amber light will stay on and the green light will start flashing. In approx 60 sec the box will turn on by itself.

f_bernardo, May 2009
click on the link below and follow the instrutions. You might have to try a few times but it works in the end!!

Similar problem. Box working ok Saturday morning but when I switched it off TV did not go back to terrestrial and since then box will not turn on despite going through rigmarole of unplugging. Red/amber light and smaller green light keep flashing periodically but will not respond to remote or buttons on front of box. Help........
