how can I get the cord on my GL 546 strimmer to release?

I am unable to get the cord for my strimmer to release as it used to when new, maybe there was a spring in the cap and it fell out when taking apart, should there be a spring there, I can't physically see anything else wrong

No spring, but there is a common problem with the toggle inside the cap. Change the cap and it should be ok
