broken female F connector socket at rear Satellite box?

Look I know this was daft, but when I was connecting my satellite box to a new dish I wasn't aware that the dish was faulty... in my haste to get reception by ensuring a good connection I pushed more and more on the internal wire into the F socket at the rear of the box. Now I notic that the two lip-like fixings that should grab the nicely 45o bevelled end of the internal wire have vanished- presumably pushed to the back of the socket. I cant find a diagram of the socket's internals so- anyone know if I can pull these forward again? - and if not, will the socket work (when my dish is replaced) if I just use about a cm of internal copper wire to poke in and connect to the lost lips at the base of the insulated sleeving?
