Replacing the backlight on portable DVD player?

I've had a polaroid 9" DVD player for about 6 months (model PDM-0990DS) and the screen will not light up. I hear the sound of the DVD but now picture. When I called Polaroid they said it sounded like the backlight had gone out and they said they would replace the player for $145, I paid about $300. Is the bad backlight the most likely problem and is it something I could do myself or have someone repair more reasonably?

yes it is most definatly the back light. It can be quite cheap to buy them if you find them on the net.And it is fairly tough to fit the new lamps because you have to pull the lcd screen apart.Get it wrong and you've had it.Try on ebay for a faulty portable dvd player and try it that way.
