How do I speed up my C400 Dell Latitude Laptop? It's so slow!!?

My Dell Laptop is extremely slow. How can I improve the speed of it. I got it as a gift from a friend in NH.

If you have no important data on the system a clean install of your operating system should give you an immediately noticeable speed boost. Otherwise you may need to increase your notebooks memory, the C400 comes with 128mb of memory as standard but can support up to 1024 MB (1gig) in two 512MB modules. The memory modules are housed in two separate memory slots, one easily accessible, is underneath the memory/modem cover on the base of the notebook, this is held in place by two screws and is quick and easy to remove. If the memory slot is empty or houses a low capacity memory module you can easily replace it with a 512mb module, it has to be a PC133 SDRAM module though. This should also give you a significant speed boost.

Get free S/W (3)

Microsoft Windows Defender - use to clear rubbish from start up file (just 4 things checked in my list)

Spybot Search & Destroy - Remove Malware (weekly)

Piriform's CCleaner - Registry tidy up (6 monthly)

Defrag disk (annually)

Use Task Manager to see what programs are running and get rid of anything suspicious.

This might take as long as 90 mins but it won't cost you anything.
