How can I fix digital bathroom scales?

My digital bathroom scales (made by EKS but which do not state any 'model' number) have decided to only display the first half of the weight i.e in stones 11.2 is displaying as just 11. How frustrating? I know the simple answer is to buy a new one and I did - a very expensive and different make - but it shows a different weight each time I get on. Doubly frustrating eh? The EKS was ALWAYS consistent, without fail. It is also very heavy unlike these new light-weight, inconsistent types. Can these digital machines be fixed? Sometimes the second number flashes up but doesn't stay - so I don't think it is just a 'failed' light bulb type issue (if that's the right term here..).

Bought a cheap scale under 10 euros worked for a year ,must say good ,but than it stops working.Checked battery ,2.75 volts ,still good.Well thing is dead so let's open it and dissect it.OK ,there is PCB board and LCD display, must remove display to see the chip, if there is any.And there he is ,usual Chinese crap, black epoxy spot on PCB,but hey, what's this there is one SMD 8pin chip. It's labeled 24C02,serial memory chip. But what is he doing here, this scale does not have any memory any buttons or programs. The only thing that comes to my mind is that this is counter ,and when he count down ,the scale will stop working. Please someone tell me I am wrong !

As a repair engineer for weighing machines, I can tell you the following. Most bathroom type scales purchased from high street outlets (including mail order etc..) are of poor quality and cannot be repaired when faulty. If you think they are expensive, a good set of medical personal scales should set you back around £300! They will be adjustable and calibrated if you buy them from a reputable scale company. These will be tested with known weights from the trading standards and should be adjusted yearly. Seriously, its a case of you get what you pay for! When cheaper scales breakdown, and they will, nothing can be done with them.
