cistern not emptying?

The cistern of our toilet fills with water but when the handle is pulled the toilet does not always flush. Gently pumping the handle a few times sometimes does the trick as well as filling the cistern a little more. What do you think the problem is?

Syphon in cistern is cracked and worn out after many years use. need replacing. If it is in two part than can be undone without removing cistern. If not than you need to dismantle cistern from WC if close couple or with flush pipe than remove syphon and either replace damage part or buy identical and replace all.

replace the syphon, if it's close coupled ie the cistern sits on top of the pan u will need to undo the two nuts underneath & remove the cistern to get at the big nut holding the syphon
