Refrigerator thermostat??

My fridge was not cooling properly, so I turned the thermostat colder. Had to do this a couple of times, until the thermostat is on the coldest setting.

Now the fridge and freezer are cold as they should be, the fridge cycles as it should, the coils in the back get hot as they should, but the thermostat is turned to its coldest setting.

How do I test and repair this fridge?

Further information-- freezer appears to be about the right temp - 10 degrees F (-5 C?). Fridge, however is too warm at 50 degrees F (13 C?). When the compressor comes on, I hear the fan in the freezer on top, indicating that it is pumping air into the fridge below, I think. Baffle in the freezer is set to "warmest" setting, so it diverts the maximum cold air to the fridge compartment, if I understand how this works. I'm stuck here.

Just diagnosed our over-stove microwave, however, and put in a new magnetron, so I'm capable of DIY repairs with some guidance. Thanks!
