phone extension re-wiring?

My phone extension socket won't work. On opening the cover I see a blue and a white wire both connected, but there is a white/orange and what looks like a white and a green not connected can anyone help?

Sorry to have to post a correction but modern phones (those sold over the last twenty or so years ) do not need the ring circuit (connector 3). They rng quite happily on a two wire circuit.

if you mean the extension doesn't ring but you have dialtone the orange/white would need to be terminated in no.3,if there is no dialtone at all check that nothing has come lose in the previous socket that works,if all is connected ok the wiring itself or socket has gone faulty, you could try terminating different wires in the ext socket and the socket that feeds it, it doesn't matter what's terminated as long as it's the same both ends.

You should have three pairs of wires. Blue, Orange and White. Each pair as follows: Colour with White Rings and White with Colour rings.

At both the Master socket and the extension the wiring is a follows: Blue with White rings to 2 and White with Blue rings to 5.

The Orange Pair and the Green Pairs are not used and should be neatly tucked away.
