computer making a funny beeping noise?

everytime i turn my computer tower on, it makes a beeping noise. it normally does it once and turns on as normal, but lately it does it about 5 times, then stops, then does it about more 3 times and then the screen goes on standby... the screen is fine, i'm 100% sure its the tower. nothing happens after the screen goes on standby.
i know this might sound really confusing as i cant really give alot of detail.
thanks for your help.

This could be due to ur Ram, switch off and unplug pwr from the wall socket, and then earth urself to the PC by holding on to the metal casing, now remove the RAM sticks and rub the gold metal where it plugs into their ports with a rubber erazer, what this does is it get's rid of the static electricity on ur ram stick's, replace and reinstall the pwr to the PC and reboot, thing's should return to normal for u...

cheers

Make sure the heatsink is fixed firmly to the cpu and that the fan is spinning (and not vlogged up with dust).
I would suggest your PC is shutting itself down to protect itself from overheating.

check your keyboard to make sure a key isn't stuck down, or one of your cards loosened up inside ie video card, sound card. Or a plug came out keyboard, mouse

There is problem with your keyboard so try to check that key board cable is inserted properly or not if not then try to remove keyboard and purchase new one.

The beeps are a report from the POST (Power On Self Test). They are used to indicate a failure early in the POST. If you can get a repair manual for the PC you may be able to translate the beeps to the FRU (Field Replaceable Unit that has failed.

If your PC's manufacturer has stuck to the IBM convention an IBM Hardware Maintenance Manual may help.

You mention what the screen is doing but not the computer - presumably when you say the screen is on standby the computer has switched itself off and is not sending any signals to paint the screen.

I suspect the power supply - it begins to work (do the fans in the machine start to run?) detects bad power and switches itself off. Starts to run etc etc and then gives up.

If it is the power supply it's an easy fix - Four screws and a couple of power connectors. New PSU about £40 - £50 - I bought a second hand one last week for £20 to fix a similar problem.

Good luck...
