washer not spinning?

my washer fills and empties but does not spin the belt is still attached around the drum wheel and also around the motor when select spin mode nothing happens but the water empties the brushes look very short could it be that i need new brushes?
my washer is an hotpoint first edition 1000

Had exactly the same problem at the weekend. Took the bushes out and cleaned them lightly with a file - reinserted and the machine works fine. Bushes were very short and I have ordered a pair from www.appliancepartsdirect.co.uk (note their website said £12 each but in fact they are supplied in a pack of 2 apparently) £3.50 for postage

yes sounds like the brushes need replacing. they are fairly cheap and easy to replace.
