Smiths mantlepiece clock only chiming once on the hour?

I have a Smiths wooden mantlepiece clock which I have just managed to get going again after some time, however for some reason it is only chiming once on the hour every hour.

How do I get it to strike the right number each hour?

Bristol, your count system on your striking train is not working properly. I would guess that it is a "rack and snail" system. The rack is not dropping properly and the strike is locking after one count. You need to find out why the rack is not dropping. If it is a "count wheel" system, then the train is locking as the arm rides on top of the wheel. You need to adjust the arm so that it only locks when it drops into the slots.

it would seem that u have to advance the hour hand around until you come to the right hour for it to strike,eg 5.0pm advance the hour hand 4 times round the clock to bring it into line with the chimer
