My mother has an older Magnavox tv. My sister was over for the weekend and plugged a DVD player into it so the kids could watch movies. Now that we've removed the DVD player, we get sound on the TV, but no picture. When we plug the DVD player back in, we get a picture and sound, so it's straight from the TV we're not getting a picture.
