Picking up bobbin thread?

I have borrowed a Singer Touch and Sew Model 626 and am out of the country without any manual. I cannot get the bobbin thread to be picked up by the needle. Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong and what I should do to make it work? I need to finish some projects ASAP and need help right away.
Also, how do you wind the bobbin thread? I had to do it by hand as I wasn't sure how to do it. It appears that the bobbin fits on the other side of the thread holder, but that's all I could figure out.

Thanking you in advance for your assistance.

Hello Mary,
If you have made sure the needle is in the correct way round and it is a good one, if the machine still does not pick up the thread on normal fabric it may need retiming.
To wind the bobbin first make sure the takeup lever is at the top and the presser foot is up, thread the machine all the way to the needle, select straight stitch, wind the thread from the needle round the presser foot screw a few times to take a grip,
opn the slide plate, pop the bobbin in, push the little button over, press on the foot control slowly and the needle will go up and down winding the bobbin, when you have enough thread close the slide plate and pull the threads to the back of the machine ready to sew, you will not be able to wind a bobbin if the machine is out of time.
