Rupert, unsure of Rose Bell's problem but to undo the screws just turn anticlockwise using the appropriate driver - given your somewhat vague description of the problem there's not much more I can say.
As a safety measure, manufacturers of small devices try to make it difficult for the average user to dismantle them - anti-tamper design.
