I've got the same problem on my Sony DVD GX210 recorder, bit annoyed 'cos I paid £200 for it and it's just out of it's 12 month warranty, don't think I'll be buying a Sony again in the future.
One solution though I've found is that it still works fine with DVD-R discs, I also found that a small circular piece of foam came out of the DVD recorder stuck to a disc from somwhere. I guess that small piece of foam is designed to do something in there and is probably what is causing the problem.
