petrol gauge gone off no power to it any ideas how to fix it

If you can find out color of wire going to sending unit for fuel gauge you can unplug it and with ingnition switch on it should either goto full scale or empty ....then ground the wire to frame and it should read opposite of other reading ....if so its a problem with the dash gauge ..
