How can I remove scratches from eye glasses?

How do you remove scratches from eye glasses?
Brenda, February 2006
Every time I scratch my sunnies, I just order new lenses from thesunglassfix.com they're better than most original lenses anyway

rubb with newspaper and silver polish

As long as you only polish by hand the advice in the first response is good: I have done this for years and it works adequately. The only time I had a problem was with a miniature power tool which polished off the scratch all right, but distorted the lens shape.

Just realize that this is appropriate for clearing minor scratches and grazes not deep ones. Deep scratches = New lenses!

While I definitely agree that sometimes we have to cheat, for financial or other reasons, it's not a good permanent fix. If you repair anything but the most superficial of scratches, you should get new glasses as soon as you get the chance. Any time you polish your lenses using these techniques, you're changing the shape of the lens, altering how it bends light on it's way to your eye. Depending on how drastic these changes are (it doesn't take much), they can be harmful. If you can't afford to replace the lenses, you might be better off with the scratches.

P.S. I don't think "Grimey" expects to profit from his advice to a distant stranger.

Dr Grimes optometrist would like you to think that buying new glasses at 200-400 dollars is the only way. These are tough economical times and sometimes we need to cheat a little. Try the paste, if your glasses help you see then you just saved yourself a lot of dough.

Shame on you Grimey.

I have a chip out of a Mikasa bowl. How can I fill it,make it even and hopefully stop the crack from running

Use a normal low abrasive toothpaste. Polish lens using small circles. Wash off paste and polish with a soft cloth. Repeat untill clear.

Scrarthes cannot be removed from the lenses of eyeglasses without effecting the quality of the lense. The products that were recommended in the previous post will destroy your glasses. It will result in making the glasses unusable. The lenses will have to be replaced for sure! Anyone that knows anything about glasses will tell you replacement is the only solution for scratched lenses. If you are advised differently consider the source.

my puppy chewed on my glasses and i can't get the scratces out of them! i dont have a cleaning brass or metal polish what can i do??

audrey, April 2007
Use BRASSO or similar can of metal polish and a soft cloth using a circular motion, just as you would cleaning brass, rub the scratched side,it takes a long time so be patient, wipe with clean cloth after about 5 mins, hold it up to the light to see the improvement then do it all over again until you are happy with the results, use a fresh portion of cloth when you do the second rub,you could also use toothpaste in the same way, rinse the parts in soapy water when done.Good luck.
