Singer 449 bobbin muddle. ?

Hi

This is my first machine and I have never sewn with one before. It could be me but the instructions for threading the bobbin are really confusing me. It tells me to "draw the thread into notch at end of spring". Going by the pictures the only notch I can make out is a flat one and there is no way of drawing any thread 'into' it. Should this notch pop up?

Looks like I've got a lot to learn eh! Help please.....

Well, since the notches are flat, you can't poke the thread into the notch like threading a needle. You've got to lay the thread near the notch, applying gentle downwards pressure so it lays flush against the bobbin case, and then pull a bit sideways towards the notch, so that the downwards pressure will guide the thread as it slips into the notch. 'Draw' is the best single word for that motion, but you're right that it isn't very intuitive.

Hello Ursula,
Things you must know about the 449, you must use a good mercerised thread only and no thicker that a number 50 or 40, drop the bobbin in so it turns anti clockwise, the thread goes in a slot on the bobbin case, pull it through the slot and pull the thread to the back, make sure the top tension is about 4 or 5, thread the machine with the presser foot up.
