I have tried to restore my computer settings to an earler point and it will not let me. Furthermore, it will not allow me to go back to a point earlier than May 09. How can I resolve this?

seems to me that you most probally have a virus on your machine which is causing this issue. If it were me. I'd take my files that I wanted to keep off the pc(flash drive or similar) and re-install a fresh copy of windows xp or whatever operating system you are using. it takes 40 odd minutes to re install versus hours of trying to problem solve this issue..
