I have a spay tap it is really stiff to turn off how can I get the top of the tap off to look at the washer etc

We're gonna need to know what tap it is as they all differ.

If it is a traditional tap you will most likely have to take the indice off the top to reveal a screw. If not there should be a cap or a removable handle.

Have you look in the instruction booklet?
