my washing machine seems to turn on when it likes i have to whack the`top of the machine heaps before it turns on and when it does it either turns straight back off or it will go through normal cycle except spin which is quit frustrating it is digital please help?

My hoover 800 rla washing machine is leaking oil into the tub. Can the problem be fixed by just replacing the seal or will the gear box likely require repairs / replacement?
