How do I make a backup disc/to reinstall a program/cd-r or cd-rw?

I want to make a cd backup of some programs to reinstall them just in case. I.ve "burned" several, computer doesn't (HP pavillion a500n with XP) know what to do with them. I have nero on another (dell, w98 second edition).

Just copying the files won't work. For a novice the only easy way is to restore them from the disks that they came on.
