I have an old Hoover Softwave , Auto-Washer 1200, I am puzzled as I cannot find where the , if there is Filter is and can it be cleaned

Yes it does. It is behind the kickplate at the base of the machine. However I can't get the filter back in now that i've removed and cleaned it out!

I know this answer is very late but this machine does not have a filter. I have had stuff like pennies get to the pump and jam it.

Its has survived 15 years of hard labour though.

Filter Locations

There are 3 possible places to look, as each machine maker installs the filter in different location places ( not always visible)
1) If machine has a square flap fitted on the front filter maybe located behind this. (no luck try next one)
2 ) Could be located behind the front lower kick panel (gently remove panel to see). (no luck it’s definitely in the last one)
3) Located inside the sump hose this is the hose that is attached to the bottom of the outer drum

Remove excess filter rubbish/gunge, then wash the filter under the tap and refit
