how can i make a ps1 work on a new t.v.d.v.d.combi?

having changed the television for a newer t.v./dvd combination we have been unable to make the ps1 work.the old t.v. had to be connected via an ariel plug.we then tried a new lead with a scart plug on one end and connected it to both av1 and av2 connections.neither has been successful.
