Richard,
I am not sure if your problem the same as the mine, but my washer stopped agitating and spinning (and made a horrible racket to boot); what I did was pretty much narrow the problem down using diagrams found by googling on my brand/model then calling Sears Parts and trouble shooting with them and they send me the part and I installed it myself.
Knowing what does and does not happen is most of the battle, the other half was following the on-line diagrams, fortunately, I have a laptop and was able to follow each picture/step right there sitting in the middle of the guts of the washer. My washer came apart undoing 2 screws on the bottom of the control panel which pivoted up and then the shell just lifted off - did not even have to move the base.
