Toilet keeps on slowly flushing?

Water is constantly trickling into the toilet bowl ie; slowly flushing all day obviously wasting a lot of water. The toilet will flush normally when the handle is turned, but once the cistern has filled up again the continuous slow trickle flush starts. I have wedged the ball cock in the up position to stop the cistern filling and wasting water, but obviously the toilet is not useable in this state. Perhaps I need to buy and fit a new syphon or maybe there is a simpler fix by perhaps tightening something but I can't see anything obvious. Regards Peter Sullivan.

Thanks Peccavi. Lowering the ball cock with the adjuster screw/lock nut, fixed it in a jiffy. I remember now that last year when we had a ground floor extension built out back, the builders had to remove the external overflow and make it overflow into the pan. Nice to have an extra toilet working again with 4 of us in the house.

Lower the float into the water to make the valve shut off sooner...

Alternatively if the valve has a nylon adjuster screw then turn it inwards towards the valve and then tighten the locking nut - this is the same as lowering the float.

If it still dribbles then the rubber seal in the valve may well have perished.

The syphon is more than probably perfectly OK because the flush mechanism works - you have an overflow into the pan. Modern systems do this but the older ones overflowed outside. The inlet valve mechanism needs adjustment or repair.
