Loud noices pressure flys up then down?

My Potterton HE is making loud banking noices, it happens a couple of minutes after I switch it on. At the same time as the noise, which sound like explosions, the pressure flyes up then down. It can't be a leak as all my pipes are at floor level. any ideas :)

faulty pump or blockage in system.

OK, the system seems to be air locked, so turn the pump on to its highest speed - if its adjustable - and keep bleeding the air out from every possible bleed valve. However, if this continues its a sure sign that your system needs flushing out.

it stays on. if I go to the valve and release air it runs ok for a couple of hours but then starts making noises again

I think the water pump on your boiler has packed in, and when the boiler ignites the water momentarily boils, causing the noises. The boiler should shut itself down immediately - I hope!
