Valiant VCW GB221H does not fire on demand?

I have a combiboiler of the above model. It has been shut down for the past 12 months or so. I have flushed the system through, & have managed to get the pilot light to ignite & stay on. When I turn on the hot water tap, I get a clicking sound but the boiler does not fire, or the pilot change its shape in anyway, indicating no extra gas being deivered? It is the same when I switch on for the central heating? I have opened up the temperature control valve & found the spindle inside broken - this is the rod knob at the bottom of the cabinet. I know I have to replace it but I need to know what else to do before making the purchase? I also notice that the water pump becomes hot after about 10 minutes of power being established? Possibly I have to bleed the system or something - can anybody assist? I do not have any operating or maintenance manuals to assist.

Just an update for everyone....I found the bleed screw on the line from the heat exchanger, behind the main cover & bled the system completely of any air - there was a lot of trapped air! Also, I removed the big slotted drive screw in the centre of the pump & physically rotated the internals, freeing them up & the pump no longer gets excessively hot -obviously due to no circulation through the pump! Now my system fires up when I put the central heating on, but still not when the hot tap is turned on? As said earlier, I found a broken spindle on the temperature control valve, so I will be replacing that in the very near future. If I want hot water, I just have to activate the relay switch sitting on top of the diverter valve by hand (this is the lever with the big spring on it. If anyone has any other ideas, I would be most welcome to hear them?
