I have just bought a 2002 ford escort van and the radio requires a code to activate it. I have the keycode but do not know how to program it in. Currently the display shows Code ---- when I press a number, a number in the third space appears. This does not make sense to me, can anyone help

Keep pressing button 1 until the first digit of the code is displayed then button 2 for the second digit and so until the code is displayed then press button 5 to enter and store the code
