How to fix a Roberts DAB Radio Gemini 59?

This was working fine but now no sound comes from the speakers, even though the radio otherwise appears to be on and tuned in.
Roberts have quoted £38 to repair but a new one only costs £43 so I'd like to try and fix it myself. I looked inside and the speaker appeared wired in normally.

i would just like to update this thread. I had the same problem, no sound except very faintly with headphones. I sent my radio to Roberts. With postage this was over £30. It came back with the same fault! I saw this thread, tried batteries and it worked fine so I called Roberts quoting this thread and Ray's post saying they knew about the problem and if they had suggested trying batteries or a new power supply it would have saved me money and hassle. The customer services manager I spoke to said they were completely unaware of the problem and therefore couldn't be expected to make these suggestions. I didn't find her customer service very satisfying. Eventually she said she would refund me £9.97 less than a third of what I'd paid them. Not a happy customer! Try batteries if you have this problem.

I have a new 9V battery. when switched on there is a slight crackling when the tuner is moved, but nothing else. Both on long and medium wavelengths there it is not possible to pick up any signals. What could be the cause of this problem?

The power supply is low - 5.8V and that is the reason for the lack of sound output from the radio.

I cut opened the mains adaptor along the centre line and revealed the 2200uF capacitor. This was the cause of the problem. I replaced the capacitor and resealed the unit with a glue gun. Do take care.

The radio is working perfectly.

Just had exactly same problem - no sound when on mains, fine on battery.

Did a bit of testing and found that power supply unit is at fault.

Replaced it with a 6v, 400 ma, centre positive supply and sound came back again.

Checking the original power unit showed it was only putting out 5.7v unloaded - looks like enough to power up the radio unit but not the amplifier for the speaker.

Thanks Ray.
No sound when using mains adapter. Fitting batteries also identified my problem. Will contact Roberts for repair/replacement.

Dave, perhaps you should actually try your suggestions before posting! Might save someone lots of time and possibly voiding guarantee.

My Gemini 59 has just developed the same fault.
Disconnect from mains and try it with batteries.
If it works the fault is between the mains adaptor and the radio.
Roberts are aware of this problem and are going to repair or replace my radio free of charge.
I just had to post it to them securely at my expense.
Hope this helps.

it is probably the aerial and its connection to the interior- have this problem with mine- not yet fixed it but easy to prove. Remove two screws on plastic suround and remove aerial by unscrewing. insert a piece of wire to represent aerail- if it now works need to re-make connection somehow, as I say, not done mine yet but this should highlight fault.
