machine powers up and says hello and nothing seems to work

Go to lite on download the firmware for your machine,burn it to a cdr/cdrw, then push the buttons on the front of your machine(don't know an order to do this) just @ random when you get the message insert disk put in the firmware disk you burned it will restore yor system and it should the work perfectly.

I have the same problem with my liteon lvw 5004 dvd recorder the reason mine is doing this is I updated the bios and took the disk out to early I believe you have to buy another but I took the DVD Writer out and put it in my PC
