Having just had a similar problem, and taken some clues from these pages, I took off the left hand cover (viewed from the front), and watched what happened. (The cover is a bit of a fiddle as well! I took the top off first - two clips at the back, and slides backward - but not sure if that's necessary)

At the bottom front of the machine is a small red float which operates a switch which, in turn starts the waste pump. In my case, the float was not moving, so the water was overflowing slightly as the machine filled. It seems that there is a secondary anti-flood arrangement, which then cuts in and prevents water entering the machine. So, by freeing off the float (you can touch the top of it with a screwdriver - make sure the machine is unplugged - electrics about!) and tipping the machine to empty any water that has overflowed into the bottom tray, it allows the machine to control the rate at which water enters. I haven't yet worked out how to access the float to clean it properly yet, but at least it has so far cost nothing but a couple of hours fiddling. Good Luck
