I have a Macdee 'Pneu-compact' 6 litre cistern. It has been working fine for two years now, flushing control works fine, however, after a successful flush the cistern refills, but seems to have a problem filling in that it does not fully stop. As a result a small amount of water continues to trickle into the cistern and eventually it must be exiting the overflow as a slow trickle of water is appearing inside the toilet bowl. The only way of stopping this trickle of water is to very quickly lift the cold water tap of either the sink or bath. I know it sounds odd but this seems to stop the flow of water into the cistern and also stop the water being overflowed into the toilet bowl. Also, after flushing, and refilling the cistern we sometimes hear a high pitch noise in the pipework, and again we have to quickly lift the cold water tap to stop this.

I suspect it's the cistern that's causing this problem. Has anyone encountered anything like this before?.

The plumber that installed our cistern and bathroom worktop (or whatever they are called) kindly did not make a hatch so that we could get easy access to the cistern. Therefore the only access is to undo the toilet flush button and then take the front panel (behind the toilet) off. But the view into the cistern is then restricted, of course.

Same problem you all encountered! Its the little black rubber bung in the inlet valve not sealing properly and so no vacuum created. I have this same not stopping problem on one of three units all fitted about 6 years ago. The other two are in bathrooms where they are flushed daily but the one with the problem only gets used when guests are stopping. I fixed it temporarily by removing the rubber inlet seal which had become indented and I rubbed it smooth with some sandpaper. This worked for a few months but just started leaking again. Now I am just looking on the Internet for some Macdee replacement seals as I think that will solve the problem. Just thought I'd share what I tried.

I'm told it's usually dirt obstructing the needle closing.
Remove the complete unit. Remove all the inserted items from inlet end. Don't worry about replacing as there is only one way each will fit. I think there are 3 white plastic and 2 washers. Check very carefully inside the tiny cone for a speck of dirt. This can be the cause of the problem.

I am having the exact same issue as Gary originally described here. I also cannot directly see or access the valves inside the tank but was able to reach around take some phone pictures. I see a central green tank and a while plunging device on the right which connects to the bottom and upper right wall.

Is there anything that can be done manually to tighten or fix either of these pieces? Would love to hear any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

I have the exact same problem as Gary back in 2009, unit now been in 2 and a bit years, been driving me crazy! stripped and cleaned the unit but still ongoing, going to get a complete unit from buyaparcel, noticed you can buy each component separately which appear to have been upgraded from the original CME components. I initially thought this was a mains pressure problem but these units are specified to operate over 0.5 to 10Bar pressure which should work almost anywhere in the uk

Since I had two of these fitted I have had the same problem over and over again. At first they barely lasted a year but then maybe two years. Also at first the firm where they came from. (Polypipe now CME Doncaster) gave me new ones for free. My last time of asking which was Aug/Sept. 2008 they gave me one free and charged me for the other. The first one has been on for two years (almost) now and so far no problems. The internal design seems to have changed. I have just fitted my second spare and I hope it lasts as long (22/07/2010) The only way to fix it is to buy a new one. OR HAVE A GO AT CME and see if you can get a new one for free.

Not a good situation Gary. As a bathroom installer I insist on leaving a way in to a cistern as I know only too well that one day access will be needed !!! It sounds like the diaphragm in the inlet float valve could be coming to the end of it's useful life, and you will for sure need access to the cistern to at least change it and rule it out.
