how can i fix my golf mk3 gti 2.0 8v?

i had my brakes done 8 months ago, calipers, discs, handbrake cable.etc. I never leave my handbrake on but i did 2 days ago and it is now stuck on. when i got back home the back discs were smoking is there anything i can do before taking it to garage?

put car in reverse and gently try to drive backwards few times, if this does not free up brakes ,it time to take wheels of and tap the drums with a soft hammer,
failing this ,of to the garage
