How can I replace the cord in my bathroom light fitting? ?

I am trying to replace the cord to the light fitting in my bathroom as the old cord came off in my hand and there are no remnants of the old cord left. The fitting is approx 30 years old. I have removed the ceiling rose and the fitting inside has a hole which is obviously where the cord will fit, but how do I get it to stay in place?

Tie a knot in it?
If the fitting is 30 years old, unless it is a particularly nice fitting I would consider replacing the whole fitting.
