I power it on but it stays on stand-by and does not go any further. I have tried with the remote and also by pressing the buttons on the front of the dvd, but it wont do anything. Please could you suggest anything to make it start. I have had it for 2 years.

FIRSTLY, DISCONNECT FROM MAINS SOCKET.
THEN TRY PRESSING THE 'OKAY' BUTTON (OR EQUIVALENT) ON YOUR MACHINE/REMOTE WHILST PLUGGING BACK INTO MAINS SOCKET.
CONTINUE HOLDING THE BUTTON UNTIL A MESSAGE LIGHTS UP ON YOUR DISPLAY PANEL.
THIS IS OFTEN A 'RESET' MESSAGE WHICH ALLOWS YOU TO RESET YOUR RECORDER TO FACTORY DEFAULT SETTINGS.
THIS HAS WORKED FOR ME ON OTHER BRAND MACHINES.
