When I replace the ring on to the piston---what is the significance of the small pin in the ring groove? Ring is flat side down.

The ring peg is to stop the ring from rotating in the piston, should it rotate it would catch in the exhaust port and destroy the cylinder and piston. It is very important to put the ring up the right way so as the cut aways in the ring matches the peg in the piston.
