How to get rid of Moss?

I have a very large lawn and after cutting it for the final time this year to my horror I found it almost covered in moss, it has taken over, there is hardly any grass left.

How can I get rid of it, and is this the time of year to do it.

You need to scarify the lawn, this will remove the moss so it can be cleared off the lawn. The next thing to do, is to go over it with a garden fork or hollow tined rolller to airate the ground so that doesn't get waterlogged, which causes the moss to grow.
