the light tells me to use reverse but reverse only hums like auto. what is wrong why won't it shredd

Could it be that the cutting knives are all jammed up and the machine senses this and wants you to drive it in reverse to clear the jam - but the jam is so bad the drive motor does not have enough power to overcome it - so you hear the motor humming as it tries to work?

You may have to free the knives manually - with the power off.
