Sony RDR VX420 - can you help or have s/manual? ?

My machine just sits there blinking its front lights at me - the two arrows that say DVD & Video. two other lights also flash in syncro with them - synchro rec & Progressive, through the cover flap.
Any help or the service manual would be appreciated.
