I have had the same problem with my Panasonic EZ25. I have stopped it happening by going into the menu and disabling the automated channel update. I did this because I was finding that after I put the unit on after it went U80 the device was telling me tht new channels were available.

I've had my Panasonic DMR-ES20D since December and it would often switch itself on during the night and display the 'U80' code. It would switch itself off again and I didn't have any problems with it. Last week it stopped working after I put a DVD-RAM in it and would repeatedly self-check and switch off and on until I unplugged it. After a few hours of this it started displaying the 'U80' code. There was no output from the unit and it wouldn't respond to the remote control so I couldn't get the disk out. I managed to prise the disc out when it was switched off and after I had unplugged it, it switched back on with no problems.

I have a Panasonic DMR-EZ25EB 3 weeks old and the same error code U80 came up 7 times. I have re-tuned the whole system 7 times and it still is happening, also the picture goes wabbily and had to disconnect from the mains and restart it. I had enough of this so I called the company that I bought it from and now having a replacement, Panasonic was not any help.

According to panasonic who are looking at my unit with the same fault it is a hang up due to the high number of different frequencies used by broadcasters in our area. They have carried out a firmware update (just because one was avail according to the tech) but the main fix will be available as a software update from mon 18th dec 2006. This is a broadcast signal and is applied by doing a full reset and retune on the unit.
Hope this helps
