Dark screen on my 7" Ferguson Personal DVD Player?

When I play a dvd on my 7" Ferguson DVD Player the screen is very dark, the brightness adjustment does make a slight differance but no where near enough. The sound is perfectly OK. Does anyone have any ideas?
